Member Photo Spotlight: San Diego, Baltic Cruise & UK Travels
Photos contributed by Peter Chan, as well as quoted narrative and photo titles.
Peter shared a collection of images from his recent travels, capturing not just the physical locations, but the deeper meaning found in exploring different corners of the globe—from the sunny Pacific coast to a milestone anniversary journey through Europe. Below, we feature his winning photographs along with the direct stories and insights behind each stop.
Finding Stillness on the Pacific Coast
"After the Wave"
“The day’s last light lingers over the quiet shore as a lone surfer walks home, board in hand, footprints fading into the sand. The ocean rests after its wild dance, and so does he—content, reflective, and at peace.
In this tranquil moment between motion and stillness, the photo captures more than a sunset—it captures the calm that follows effort, the gratitude that follows experience, and the quiet joy of simply being part of something vast and timeless.”
"Golden Farewell"
“As the sun dips gently into the Pacific, its final rays embrace a weathered tree standing watch over the quiet shore—a timeless symbol of peace, reflection, and the fleeting beauty of each moment. Though this tree has since fallen, its memory lives on in this breathtaking scene, reminding us that paradise is not only a place, but a feeling we carry with us.
Captured on one of our most serene coastal escapes, this photograph invites travelers to pause, breathe, and reconnect—with nature, with loved ones, and with themselves.”
Reconnecting Across the Baltic Sea
Peter’s journey brought a personal dimension to the classic cruise experience. Traveling aboard the MSC Poesia, he and his wife Joyce turned a milestone anniversary into a reunion with lifelong friends.
“To celebrate our 33rd anniversary, Joyce and I joined two other couples for a delightful Baltic Sea cruise. All three couples met as freshmen in college, and now, as we approach the retirement stage of life, it was a joy to reunite, share a touch of luxury, and create new memories together.”
The Historic City of Visby, Sweden
A prominent stop on many Baltic itineraries is the island of Gotland and its medieval capital, Visby. Known as the “City of Roses and Ruins,” this UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for its remarkably preserved 13th-century stone fortifications, including a massive 2.2-mile town wall that still rings the historic core. Wandering down the narrow, rose-lined cobblestone alleys feels like stepping directly backward in time.
Peter’s photos capture the soaring, roofless stone arches of the St. Catherine Church Ruins (S:ta Karin). Originally founded by the Franciscan order in 1233, the cathedral church underwent centuries of expansions before being abandoned during the Reformation in the 1520s. Today, its massive pillars stand open to the sky, inviting travelers to walk through paths where centuries of history overlap.

Cruising Aboard the MSC Poesia
The Baltic Sea cruise experience is defined by long, scenic daylight hours during the summer months. Moving between northern capitals like Stockholm, Helsinki, and Copenhagen, the route offers calm waters and slow, reflective sunsets over the open sea. Traveling on a refined mid-sized ship like the MSC Poesia allows guests to balance active days exploring historic ports with quiet evenings looking out over the water.
Pre-Cruise Excursions: Exploring the UK
Before boarding their cruise, Peter and Joyce took time to travel overland through the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
“In celebrating our 33rd anniversary, Joyce and I toured the UK and the Netherlands before joining up with our old friends on a Baltic cruise.”
The Ancient Mystery of Stonehenge
Located on the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, Stonehenge remains one of the world‘s most recognizable prehistoric monuments. Built in continuous phases starting roughly 5,000 years ago, the monument’s true purpose continues to puzzle historians and archeologists alike.
The site features massive sarsen megaliths weighing an average of 25 tons, carefully aligned to track the movements of the sun during the summer and winter solstices. Viewed across the open grass of the English countryside, it serves as a stark reminder of humanity’s enduring desire to build lasting monuments.
2025-2026 Winning Photo: London, England
The grand prize-winning photograph features Joyce standing at More London Place on the South Bank of the River Thames in London, England, set against the striking backdrop of the 7 More London Riverside building—famously known as the “Batman Building,” due to its dramatic geometric curves. The image excels through its use of a dramatic low-angle perspective that emphasizes the grand scale of the modern glass skyscrapers looming overhead. Strong leading lines in the textured plaza floor draw the viewer’s eye directly toward the subject, while the contrast between the dark, angular façade on the left and the bright, warm glass grid on the right frames her beautifully in a pocket of natural light and reflections of a crisp urban morning.
